Important Changes in Poomsae Eligibility for 2021 National Championships, 2021 Grand Prix Final, and 2021 Grand Slam Invitational
The 2022 World Poomsae Championships were recently announced to be held in April of next year. The National Team selection roster will be selected 12 weeks prior to the event. As a result, it will be difficult for athletes who are aging up to earn points in their new division for the World Championships.
In fairness to those athletes who are moving into a new poomsae age division next year, and with the interest of fielding the best possible USA Team, the following changes to eligibility for poomsae athletes at the 2021 National Championships (August), 2021 Grand Prix Final (September), and 2021 Grand Slam Invitational (December) will go into effect:
- All World Class poomsae athletes who have qualified for the 2021 USA National Championships, and who are moving up new age divisions in 2022, may compete in either their “YEAR 2021” division or their “YEAR 2022” division, or both. This group includes youth athletes moving up into cadet divisions.
- Poomsae Individuals, pairs and teams who have not qualified for the 2021 National Championships may apply for a waiver to that event as follows:
- Individuals who are aging up to a new division from 2021 to 2022, but who did not compete at the 2021 Grand Prix Series, may apply for a waiver to compete at the 2021 National Championships by submitting the waiver form. Click here to view the waiver form.
- Athletes may form new pairs and teams for the 2021 National Championships, and members need not have previously qualified at the 2021 Grand Prix Series
- Seeding for athletes aging up into a new YEAR 2022 division will be seeded based on 50% of their previous age division points
- If a pair or team that competed in the 2021 Grand Prix Series has all members aging up into a new division, they also qualify for their "YEAR 2022" division at the Grand Prix Finals. Individuals, pairs, and teams who medal at the 2021 National Championships will qualify for the Grand Prix Final as previously announced.
- For 2022 National Team Events, there will be no "highest points" major for pairs and teams to address fairness considerations, however athletes may earn major credit towards dominant athlete status at other events specified in the 2021 Poomsae Pathway. Ranking points will be used for seeding at events as well as for qualification for the 2021 Grand Slam Invitational.
- For individuals who compete in two different Individual divisions at the 2021 National Championships, 2021 Grand Prix Finals or 2021 Grand Slam Invitational, they will earn points in both divisions. However, when that individual moves up in 2022 to their new individual age division, they will only carry forward either 50% of their “YEAR 2021” points for that event, or 100% of their “YEAR 2022” points for that event, whichever is greater - but not points for both divisions from that event.
It has not yet been announced whether there will be any additional national team events in 2021. If so, the 2021 Poomsae Pathway will apply. Individuals, pairs, and teams who qualify for the Grand Prix Finals through medaling at the 2021 Grand Prix Series or 2021 National Championships for both their YEAR 2021 division and YEAR 2022 division can compete in the qualified YEAR 2021 division or YEAR 2022 division or both.
Example 1 for Individual division:
Athlete A = 14 years old
Athlete A competes in World Class Cadet Individual (YEAR 2021 division) at the 2021 Grand Prix Series. By medaling, they qualify for the Grand Prix Finals, and they are eligible to compete at the National Championships since they attended the Grand Prix Series.
Athlete A applies for a waiver to compete in World Class Junior Individual (YEAR 2022 division) at the 2021 National Championships. By medaling at the National Championships, they qualify for the 2021 Grand Prix Finals in the World Class Junior Individual division.
Athlete A is qualified to compete in World Class Cadet Individual (YEAR 2021 division) or World Class Junior Individual (YEAR 2022 division) or both at the National Championships and Grand Prix Finals.
