USA Taekwondo is Listening and Taking Action!

2023 U.S. Taekwondo National Championship Schedule Change

USA Taekwondo is geared up for big changes to our tournament experience in the 2023 Championship Season and beyond. Following consultation with athletes, coaches, and parents, led by the USATKD Events and Marketing Departments, and our Director of Athlete Affairs Sherman Nelson, USATKD is making major changes this year and is committed to providing our members with a fantastic tournament experience at every Team USA event - one that is safe, meaningful, efficient, fun and competitive.

Upon receiving valuable feedback from you, our members, USA Taekwondo worked to announce the 2023 events, including the 2023 U.S. National Taekwondo Championship earlier than ever. This announcement included event dates, location, detailed schedules, and registration.

We heard loud and clear that the early release of event information allows for the opportunity to plan competition seasons more efficiently, enabling US athletes and coaches to both train and budget in a way that would maximize their opportunity for success. Our events team worked to deliver on that goal with great success - planning, announcing, and detailing multiple events many months ahead – and you can expect this to be the standard from now on.

USATKD was surprised late last week to see another organization subsequently scheduled divisions in direct conflict with the 2023 U.S. National Taekwondo Championships, placing athletes and coaches in an unfortunate situation. To assist athletes the USATKD team has chosen to amend the 2023 U.S. National Championships schedule to remove all black belt division conflicts and as many other conflicts as possible thus enabling US athletes the opportunity to compete at events which align with their athletic goals. Please see the USA Taekwondo Website for the Updated 2023 U.S. National Taekwondo Championships Schedule.  We apologize for any inconvenience this schedule adjustment may cause athletes, parents, and coaches who may have to adjust their plans as a result.

The U.S. National Taekwondo Championship event is pivotal to providing athletes a chance to qualify to compete at the US Team Trials, win valuable U.S. National Ranking Points to get a better seed at Team Trials, and offers the potential to work towards earning the U.S. Domestic Dominant Athlete Title.

The USA Taekwondo team is committed to providing competitive opportunity for ALL athletes and provides the only pathway to become a U.S. National Team Member, to represent the United States and compete in major world events, with U.S. National Team spots in youth, cadet, junior and senior divisions, in both Poomsae and Sparring.

With World and/or Pan American Championships imminent in cadet, junior, senior and all Poomsae categories, and the Olympic Games next year, we know how important it is for athletes to compete, test themselves against the best and continue their development toward their athlete goals.

We look forward to seeing you at 2023 USA Taekwondo Events and invite you to share in a new and improved ultimate taekwondo experience. Sherman Nelson, USATKD Director of Athlete Affairs said: “in 2023 we are bringing the fun back!”

In closing, we would like to take this opportunity to re-announce the 2024 U.S. National Taekwondo Championship. This event will be held in Ft. Worth, TX from July 4-July 7, 2024. We hope this re-announcement will enable all the time needed to plan accordingly. The detailed schedule for 2024 Nationals will be released publicly at the 2023 U.S. National Taekwondo Championships this July.   If tournament organizers would like to preview the schedule prior, to avoid future conflicts and assist with scheduling of their events, please contact Steve McNally at smcnally@usatkd.org.
